From Hurricane Wiki

The term "hurricane" has been around for many years. In ancient times, the natives of the Atlantic region would pray to their god 'Huracan' to grant them mercy. Huracan was the powerful god of the sky and is said to have wiped out the 'first' human race because they had angered the gods. He made a wave with his arm and all the world's oceans rose up and swamped the continents, destroying everything. The word hurricane still invokes almost a spiritual awe in the descendants of those ancient peoples. The word has a certain power to it. Everytime it is spoken, it gains people's attention. They are nature's greatest storms; the ultimate destructive power. A tornado near Oklahoma City in 1999 clocked winds of 318 mph, but most tornados last for mere minutes and their destruction is localized. Hurricanes have lasted for as long as a month at sustained intensity and can leave widespread destruction. One hurricane left half a million people dead in Bangladesh in 1970. Generatons, families just wiped out. A powerful hurricane is truly an amazing thing to watch. They have been in North American lore for thousands of years and there is still so much we don't know about them. Welcome to the fury of the sky.
