Moved from Hurricane Wiki talk:Work needed In lieu of a "main page" in the forum namespace, the community portal could simply list all the forums, among any other functions it might have. --Coredesat 08:19, 22 April 2007 (UTC)

Hmm, we might need a dedicated "main page" for the fora though. I think how to do any categorisation is something that needs a bit of discussion somewhere, that is probably the portals job. Also lets replace the logo already! ;)--Nilfanion 11:30, 22 April 2007 (UTC)
If you're talking about the Wikia logo, I agree. Fran doesn't quite work. How about something like this? (just a thought) [1] Cyclone1(15:36-22-04-2007)
I was thinking something along the lines of the cyclone barnstar, or possibly maybe a picture of Ioke or a similar impressive storm that didn't affect land. --Coredesat 13:23, 23 April 2007 (UTC)
I have no preference as long as it is not either of Gafilo or Catarina. A sat pic of a storm is probably the best option though.--Nilfanion 16:16, 23 April 2007 (UTC)
I went ahead and used this one of Ioke, and the "hurricanes" in "hurricanes.wikia" is in a slightly brighter shade of the WP Cat 5 color. How's this? --Coredesat 22:20, 23 April 2007 (UTC)

Wow! Very nice! I like it! Cyclone1(01:03-24-04-2007) End of moved discussion

Looks fine to me too. I'll do a bit of photoshopping later (to remove the gridlines).--Nilfanion 16:16, 24 April 2007 (UTC)

Style issues[]

Obviously, we do not want anything like the Manual of Style here. However, that does not mean we should ignore stylistic concerns totally. Three issues spring to mind:

  1. English-language variants: Should we use en-us (or anything else) exclusively, a WP-style mix or something else
  2. Date formatting: Should we use a standard formatting for dates or should we use wikilinks to make date prefs work. If so, what do we put at all the date pages?
  3. Unit selection: What units should we use?

My personal preferences for these three are:

  1. WP-style
  2. Make use of wikilinked date prefs, making all the pages a redirect to a help page on preferences.
  3. Use knots/nm preferentially in articles; as the standard scientific unit in this field. Forum and talk space aren't relevant to this of course.

Other opinions? --Nilfanion 19:36, 24 April 2007 (UTC)

Copyrighted images[]

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/7/7b/Hurricane_John_2006_radar.jpg/100px-Hurricane_John_2006_radar.jpg

What images are we willing to accept. Should we only accept images with licenses accepted on the Commons? Or should we allow copyrighted images under fair use? I'm inclined to say we should accept non-free imagery. The reason is not all sources are free. The image above is from the SMN. The SMN is a useful source for radar images of TCs in that area, as is Bermuda...--Nilfanion 16:34, 25 April 2007 (UTC)

Seeing as we're not an encyclopedia, we might as well allow non-free images unless a particular agency asks us not to. The only thing I would suggest is to keep non-free images off user and forum pages (similar to on WP). --Coredesat 22:32, 25 April 2007 (UTC)
Well, that's a misunderstanding of why WP has strict rules. As an encyclopedia in general it is generally not in competition with the copyright holder (the important legal restriction regarding fair use). The reason for the rules there are the free-content mission and reusability concerns. I'd say our only FU criteria should be "must be used in article space, and only article space".--Nilfanion 23:00, 25 April 2007 (UTC)
I'd stick with the wikipedia rules, to be safe. Don't want to be the topic/subject of a copyright infringement. Thegreatdr 17:26, 17 May 2007 (UTC)

How creative?[]

What types of articles are we now capable of making? Without the normal rules of Wikipedia breathing down our necks, how creative are we allowed to get? Could we make an article on, say, Mediterranean Tropical Cyclones including Hink's discovered storms? Maybe an article on, I don't know, significant INVESTS? Possible storms? Off-season storms? I'm just curious. How creative can we get with articles now? Cyclone1(02:01 UTC -27/04/2007)

Maybe I'm thinking too narrowly, but personally I don't want to be developing articles on two wikipedia-like entities. What if the media discovers this second set of articles? Even worse, what if the other RSMCs discover them? Personally, I know I won't be able to take part in creating articles for this set of pages...the general discussion is more than enough. Thegreatdr 17:31, 17 May 2007 (UTC)
Articles that can be created on en.wikipedia should be created there as a first priority. Titoxd(?!?) 19:56, 18 May 2007 (UTC)

Categories[]

What cats do we want? How should we implement the top level article-space hierarchy? Its unlikely we will get more than that, but it should be designed to allow expansion if needed. Should we categorise the images by content and by license? etc...--Nilfanion 22:37, 28 April 2007 (UTC)

Image categorizing by license sounds like a good idea. Categories could change, like a category could be for active storms and when the storm becomes inactive, it could be moved to past storms. And of course, we could have permanent categories, like a past storm that reached hurricane status would always be categorized under hurricanes. We want to make it easy to browse articles by category, so my only request is to keep it as general as possible (which is I suppose is the point of categories). Discussion archives from Wikipedia[]

The archives for the discussions of tropical cyclones (and not tropical cyclone articles) are up for deletion on WP. Irrespective of how that deletion discussion closes, the question has been raised as to if it should be transwikied to here. That is technically possible and could be done without violating the GFDL, whether the archives are kept or deleted. However, the specialized subpages (like the betting pools) cannot be retained in that manner. This means the only issue for the main discussions is "do we want them"?--Nilfanion 09:48, 13 May 2007 (UTC)

Oh and we can do the export/import routine. This would enable transwikiing of the specialized subpages, possibly including the deleted ones, if that does not violate WPs admin rules.--Nilfanion 10:40, 13 May 2007 (UTC)
Why not. It would reinforce the idea that this is the site for general tropical cyclone discussion. Let's send the old discussions here. I agree about betting pools not being copied over. Thegreatdr 17:29, 17 May 2007 (UTC)

Tropical Atlantic, Pacific, etc. radar[]

So, since we get a lot of information from these maps and reference them in our forums and forcast updates, should we make a page that is sort of dedicated to these? If we link to them from a site such as NOAA (if this falls under our image usage rules; admins? users? what do you think?), then they will update when their home site updates. This will give a "live" radar that anyone can reference here. Ideas? Comments? --Galaxy001talk 01:20, 30 May 2007 (UTC)

New skin[]

Hi guys,

Several months ago, Wikia released a new site skin called Monaco which replaces the existing skin (Quartz). The new skin features tools which make it much easier for visitors to find content and edit it. You can read about the new skin here. While you will still be able to select Quartz as the skin you personally used to view the site (via Special:Preferences), we are no longer supporting Quartz as a default skin for anonymous visitors. This wiki still uses Quartz, so we need to change it to Monaco. There is a similar theme in Monaco; check out how the homepage would look in Monaco here.

Take a look at it, and let me know if you have any questions. You can learn about customizing the menus and other aspects of Monaco here.

Thanks! --KyleH (talk) 22:51, 22 October 2008 (UTC)

Deletion needed[]

Don't really know where to put this, but spam needs to be deleted @ Buy zoloft. --Dil (chat) 21:01, November 9, 2010 (UTC)
