Hurricane Emily was a hurricane in the 2005 Atlantic hurricane season and the earliest forming category five hurricane in the Atlantic basin on record.

Meteorological History[]

On July 6th, a tropical wave moved off the coast of Africa. The disturbance moved westward and gradually organized until July tenth when it was deemed Tropical Depression five. The next day, it began to strengthen and it was named Tropical Storm Emily. It was originally forecast to undergo rapid strengthening and go west-northwest towards the Greater Antilles, but it moved due west through the Windward Islands. Hurricane Dennis had left warmer water behind, contrary to what normally happens when a hurricane passes through, therefore it left the area more favourable for cyclone development. It achieved a minimum pressure of 929 mbar.
